Jayne sat on the mule in the cargo bay, waiting for the others to arrive.
It hadn't even been five minues since Zoe had talked to him in the dining area. "Ready in a few minutes, my ass," he muttered. He just wanted this particular mission to be over with. He liked to think that it wasn't because of the gun lesson he was going to give River.
He leaned back in his seat and stretched, hearing the bones in his spine pop slightly. He didn't have Vera with him, the more he thought about it, the less need for it he saw. Even though it was his absolute favourite gun, it was damn cumbersome. even for a man of Jayne's size and bulk.
"Gorramit," he growled impatiently. "Where in the hell are they?"

Comin'...don't worry. All in cockpit...arquin' *she stepped down the steps, her hand on her left arm, watching him* Went to see where they were...Saw, came back.
*she moved over to the mule, and climbed in, taking her seat in the back beside Jayne, where she always sat. She leaned back, resting her hands in her lap, her legs spread a little apart*
I don't think were goin' to do the job...*she spoke quietly*

"Y'don't think so? Somethin' you saw?" he asked, leaning towards her, trying to get a hint of her scent again.

Mal's fightin' on the com with Badger. Somethin' about another client more elligable for the job *she shrugged a little*
I don't mind, either way. If the job falls through...theirs a sheep herding position. I saw it on the Cortex, and it's on Persphone. Wouldn't take more than a week to do, and is payin' just as much. But Mal doesn't listen to me when it comes to money *she looked at him*
It's Jasmine. Would you like me to buy you a bottle? *She smirked at him*

He bristled slightly and jerked away from her.
"Sorry," he said, surprised at that. "I always liked the smella jasmine. My mama wore it all the time. 'Bout the only fancy thing she could afford."
"Smellin' it," he continued, "reminds me of home."

*She smiled, shifting so she was facing him, leaning up against the side rail of the mule* Tell me about home, Jayne? *she pulled her legs under neath her and watched him with curious eyes*

His eyebrows furrowed. "Why the sudden curiosity 'bout me?" he asked.
"You really wanna hear 'bout it?" more surprise than anything else. No one else on the ship seemed to care much about his past, except Kaylee, and even then, he had the feeling she was just trying to be polite.

Because it means something to you *she smiled a little* And maybe one day I'll be able to meet your Mama, and tell her all the wonderful things you've told me *she smiled a little, brushing the hair from her eyes*

"Ain't you gettin' ahead o' yourself?" Jayne asked, not fully grasping the full meaning of what he has said.
Once he does, he says, "Uh, I mean...I may be missin' what you're gettin' at."

No, just curious is all. No one talks about their past here...cept Simon, and I know all of that. *she giggled a little*

Jayne shifted in his seat. He wasn't totally comfortable sharing his past with people, especially people he knew. He thought that it would make him seem weak in their eyes. As a result he came off as a total brute most of the time.
Not that he cared what they thought.
"Not much to tell, really," he said, not looking at her. "Mama raised me and Matty, my brother, by herself on account o' my Daddy leavin' as soon as Matty was born. Matty's sickly so he couldn't well take care of us. I worked as much as I could in town, but most o' the time, we was always hungry."
He stopped for a moment and ran a hand through his hair. "That's partly why I left as soon as I was able, to get work in the city. Ended up becomin' a merc. I send most of my money to help out Mama and Matty."
"They're doin' a lot better than they was now. Matty's doin' a lot better. He's not so sickly anymore."

*She remained quiet as he spoke, occasionally glancing at her lap. She shifted a little, pulling her legs underneath her, resting her head against the back of the mule.
Once he was done speaking, she wasn't quite sure what to say. She shifted again, this time, resting her head against his shoulder, putting a hand on his chest. Her form fitting perfectly with his, still remaining quiet.
There was nothing to be said*

Jayne started a bit when River put her hand on his chest and leaned against his body when he was finished speaking. A slight blushe developed in his cheeks, which was very uncharacteristic of Jayne, who didn't seem capable of blushing.
He looked down at her. "Hey, y'okay?" he asked, a hint of concern in his deep voice.

Thats a better question for you *She glanced up at him, smiling a little. She took in a breath and snuggled closer to him, shutting her eyes, lsitening to the rhythm of his heartbeat*
No wonder so cold...

He sat on the mule, River snuggled against him, dumbfounded. There was no other word for it. Jayne Cobb had no idea what to do with all the thoughts going through his mind.
This was one of the weirdest things to have ever happened to him since leaving home and heading out to the black.
Not sure of what else to do, Jayne put his arm around River's shoulders, hoping that this wouldn't get him fileted alive by her brother and then tossed out the airlock by Mal.
