Jayne heard the anger in River's voice, and groaned. This was the one thing he had kept from the others on the ship. And now that it was out, he knew nothing would be the same.
And he had hurt River, he knew that much was certain. And after what had just happened between them he knew the hurt was worse for her now than it ever would've been.
"Gorramit," he said, groaning under his breath. He looked at the girl. What was her name? "You give 'im back his wallet and you stay right here," he said, letting go of her wrist. He softened his gaze a her a bit and said, "I'd like t'talk to ya a bit."
He walked back over to River, keeping her in his focus, knowing all Hell was about to break loose.

*River crossed her arms when Jayne advanced towards her, his eyes narrowing slightly. He wasn't denying it. There was no "Gorramit, I'm not your dad" in response to the girl. No...he was being nice to her...almost caring.
And his whispers were giving him away, before he even said a word to her.
But had she not have heard them, she still would have known the truth. Deep in her heart. Her gaze dropped to the ground, staring at the steel covering of the ship, and she had to bite down on her lip to keep control*

Mikey watched as her father moved towards the angry looking girl, still feeling his hand around her wrist.
Without a word, she handed the man his wallet back, a small sinking feeling in her gut at the thought of giving up that amount of money.
Her Dad had said to stay where she was as well, that he wanted to talk to her.
She wanted to talk to him too. She hadn't seen him since she was a child and wanted to know what he had been up to.
She also wanted to know why he had left in the first place. Her mother had never said anything bad about him, but she had sensed, even at her age, some amount of bitterness about his departure.
Mikey wanted some answers too.

Jayne stood looking at River, not sure of what to say to her. He knew she wanted some type of explantation for what had happened. He couldn't offer one and he felt defeated.
"River," he began. "I-"
He couldn't think of anything to say.
"I'm sorry I didn't tell ya."

Yeah...your sorry *She gruffed and shook her head. She didn't want to think on it, didn't want to deal with it. Didn't want to except it. She just shook her head, almost with a look of disappointment, then pushed past Jayne.
She kept on walking, and as she passed by Mikey, she stopped. She looked her up and down, just for a moment, a disgusted look on her face.
The girl couldn't have been a year younger then herself. She felt chills run up her spine and she just nodded to the girl, before heading off into the crowds of Persephone, her head down as she walked*

Mikey watched the small exchange between her father and the small girl. It was vicious, and she could tell that even from this distance. She was surprised when the girl walked away without slapping him, which she almost expected to happen.
The girl walked over to her and stopped, sneering as she looked her up and down. Mikey crossed her arms and stared right back at her, wondering what he problem was.
Then it occured to her; this girl was probably about a year older than her, if that. And she probably had some thing going on with her Mikey's father. She almost couldn't blame her for being upset but why be upset at Mikey? She didn't do anything.
Placing her hands in her pockets again, Mikey kicked at the ground with her boots, glancing over to where Lex and Murray were still standing, unable to read the looks on their faces.
"Ain't this interestin'?" she asked herself, looking towards her father.

Jayne turned as River walked away, mouth open to say something.
But he couldn't think of anything. Nothing he could say would be satisfactory for her. He knew that. And he also knew that he would have to make it up to her in any way he could.
That would have to wait for the time being. Jayne looked up and saw his daughter still standing near Simon and Kaylee, who looked pretty dumstruck over this whole thing.
To be honest, Jayne felt a bit dumbstruck over everything, too.
'Might as well get it over with,' he thought, running a hand through his hair as he strode over to where his daughter was standing. Damn it, what was her name?
He stood in front of her, unsure of what to say first. "Hey," was the first word that popped out of his mouth.

Mikey smiled a bit at her father. He seemed pretty awkward around her, and who could blame him? She had never expected to run into him, least of all like this. She had one time, when she was younger, fancied becoming a pilot and searching the 'verse for him. After her mother died, that dream did too. She had almost forgotten about it until this moment.
"Hey yourself," she said back to him, flipping a strand of hair behind her back. "'Ve got some questions that need answerin'. You wanna sit down and answer 'em for me or do this here?" Mikey had always gotten to the point in her conversations. And in a situation like this, there was no sense in beating around the bush.
Without waiting for an answer, Mikey began asking what had been on her mind for years. "Why'd you leave? Why didn't you try and contact Mom? What have you been doing all this time? And why are you back here?"

Jayne was a bit taken aback by her forwardness. He hadn't counted on it. She reminded him a lot of Eva, her mother. Eva was very forward about things. And it had been one of the reasons Jayne had been attracted to her in the first place. He liked forwardness in his women.
'Well you certainly broke that pattern,' a small voice in his head snapped, which Jayne brushed away. Now was not the time to be thinking about that.
"Well, don't know what yer Momma told ya, but I went t' be a merc. Try an' earn some more money fer us. I di'n' wanna expose you two t' it so I left ya behind. Now I wish I hadn't. As fer why I di'n' contact her, yer Momma was plenty mad when I left an' I di'n' wanna risk that wrath. But then I heard she died and I thought you had too." A look of saddness crossed his features at that. Jayne never let anyone get too close to him, for fear that they would be snatched away from him. He had let Eva get close to the point of loving her. And when she died it nearly broke him.
He hadn't let anyone get close until very recently. And he was afraid he had messed that up now before it even got started.
"Most of the time, since I left, that is, I've been a merc an' a tracker for various folk. Them as had the money at the time. Right now, I'm travelin' with Mal Reynolds. Still a merc when the situation calls for it, but we're smugglers of a sort. Which is why we're here. Gonna try an' get another job. Not gonna stay fer long in any case."
He looked at her and studied her reaction...and finally remembered her name: Michelle Maya Cobb. "How'd yer Momma die anyhow, Michelle?"

Mikey didn't say a word through her father's explanation. She studied him the whole time, looking for a lie. And found none. The sadness on his face was genuine and she could tell he genuinely regretted leaving them behind, or at least not staying with them.
She started a bit when he said her real name. She hadn't been called 'Michelle' in so long, not since her mother died. Not even Murray or Lex called her that anymore. "She got influenza the winter I turned seven. We di'n' have a lot in the way of money, so she got me the vaccine and none for herself." Her eyes started to sting a bit, but she blinked rapidly and the tears were gone. The memory was still fresh and stung quite a bit. It was a scar that had never healed for her.
She caught the look that passed his face and said, "Don't think you're responsible for it. Mom had the chance to marry some fancy man, but she di'n' want to because she wanted to take care of me herself." She brushed a hand through her hair and continued with, "She taught me to take care of myself. And she must've done a good job because I've survived pretty much on my own since then." She pointed over to where Lex and Murray were standing. "Those two are my best friends and the people I consider to be my family now." A small smile crossed her face. "At least until now."

*Kaylee stood by Simon's side. Weren't they supposed to be doing something? She knew they were, in fact, she knew what they were supposed to be doing.
But that didn't even seem the slightest bit important at that moment. She had remained quiet through the whole scene, soaking it all up in slight wonder and confusion. Her eyes had followed River, as she stormed off, a frown growing on her lips...as if something had just suddenly connected in her brain, like it had clicked.
But then her attention had shifted back to Jayne...and the girl. She could say she was a little hurt herself, she had always considered Jayne to be a good friend. She knew he kept secrets, but in her mind, she could not figure out why he would keep such a wonderful thing as family a secret.
Or why he would abandon them. But it was not her place to judge...and in fact, it wasn't her or Simon's place to be there at that moment. She nudged Simon gently, whispering* Let's go...*She knew, even if Jayne didn't necesarily need it, the girl would want some time alone with him. And she felt like she was intruding*

Simon started a bit when Kaylee nudged him. He had practically been transfixed by the exchange between Jayne and the young girl who had just picked his pocket. He felt his pocket again, just to be sure it was still in there from when she had given it back to him.
How in the world was it possible for Jayne to have had a family and none of them had known about it? True, Jayne wasn't one to talk about his past, but this was something important, and even Simon felt that Jayne should've told them.
'I wonder what Mal'll say when he finds out?' Simon thought. It wasn't exactly an appealing thought, as he had been on the receiving end of Mal's anger before. His back hurt at the memory of being thrown onto the table, Mal's dark blue eyes glaring into his own brown ones.
"Let's go..."
Simon nodded, though every part of him wanted to stay and find out more details about Jayne and his daughter, but he didn't want to feel more like an intruder than he already did.
"Should we see how River is doing?" he asked. He wasn't sure what that was about either, but his sister seemed hurt and angry at Jayne, and he wanted to know why.

*Her hand snuck down, scooping up his hand, clasping it gently. She began walking off deeper into the cargo hold, though she gave one last glance over her shoulder, examining the girl.
Jayne's Daughter. The thought just seemed so...surreal. She sighed a little, before turning her attention back to Simon. The look on her face when he asked the question was damn near appauld. She took a moment, then shook her head*
No Simon. *She knew him. She knew he was curious...she knew he had this protective part of him that wanted to know everything that went on in River's little head.
But it was not his or Kaylee's business.*

Simon quirked an eyebrow at her reaction to his question. As much as he hated to admit it, she was right. It was none of his business what his sister was thinking about right now.
"I suppose you're right," he conceded, sighing a bit. "I just...I don't know."
He took another glance back at Jayne and his daughter, Michelle, her name was, and shook his head.
He couldn't help wondering again what would happen when Mal got back.

*She gave him a small smile* Come on...I'll make you something
*Though it hadn't been stated, she was pretty sure their original plans for returning to the ship were now cancelled. She didn't know about him, but she'd much rather just sit down with a bowl of rice, since that was all they had other then protein packs until they stocked up, and discuss what had just occured.
And ofcourse, wait for Cap'n to return*
