Wash put down the third box on the cargo bay floor and stopped, leaning against the Mule. The boxes were heavier than he had thought they'd be and he wasn't used to lugging so many at one time. Usually, they only had enough credits for two or three. But he'd actually managed to get seven. 'Well certainly have enough provisions to last a long time. And fuel. That's the important thing.'
He looked to the left when he heard footsteps on the metal stairs. "Ah, Jayne. My saviour," he said when he saw the large man. "Be a dear fellow and help me unload the rest of these boxes."

"Never mind that," Jayne said as he stopped in front of Wash. "What happened 'tween Mal and 'Nara? She looked ready t' rip him a new pigu."
"What'd he do this time?"

Wash sighed and started unloading again, climbing back onto the Mule. "Don't know what happened. All I know is that when Zoe and I were coming back, we spotted Inara. She looked like she'd been crying."
"I didn't know it had anything to do with Mal, though I can't say I'm surprised. The man does have a habit of saying things he shouldn't." He stopped and looked at Jayne. "Like some other people I know."
He stopped and sighed. "You know, if you want to know, just go up and ask her what happened. Or ask Mal, though I doubt they'd tell you. It's no one's business but theirs."

"Da-shiang bao-tza shr duh lah doo-tze you know they ain't gonna tell me nothin'. Almost gotta be a reader t' find out anythin' on this boat."
He climbed up next to Wash, grabbed the last two boxes, jumped down and set them on the floor. "This all of it?"

Wash nodded. "Yep. Everything's done, and I'm glad for it. I'm going to shut the doors and tell Mal that we can leave at any time, since everyone's back home."

"Err, not everyone's back, no," Jayne said, leaning against the Mule. "We're waitin' on three people. They had to go get their stuff but it shouldn't take 'em long to come back."

A quizzical look passed Wash's face. "We got some passengers? Where they headed?"

"They ain't passengers," he said, looking right at Wash to gauge the other man's reaction. "They're gonna be crew. Mal just hired 'em." He paused before continuing.
"They're my daughter and her two friends."

Wash just stared at Jayne, unsure if he was comprehending what the man said. "I'm sorry. Did you just say your daughter was joining us? YOUR daughter?"

"Yeah, my daughter. It's a long story, one I've told a lot t'day. Long story short; when I was younger, I was livin' on Persephone, had me a girl an' we had a baby girl. I left 'em t' become a merc, heard my girl had died and thought my baby had too. I just met up with her t'day when she was pickin' the Doc's pocket."
"An' now they're part of the crew."

Jayne glared at Wash and said, "Wish people'd stop actin' so suprised at this fact. Ain't like any o' y'all ever asked 'bout my life. 'Specially since I did have a life 'fore I ever signed on with this crew."

Wash stared at Jayne. "Well, if you would maybe let people in once in awhile, we might be more inclined to ask about you."
"I'm not trying to suggest things to you, because I know it won't do much good. But people like Kaylee and some others of us do genuinely like you, and wouldn't mind knowing more about you."
"It's just something to think about, Jayne," he added, walking away towards the stairs, making his way towards the kitchen.
