Profession: Pilot/Smuggler
History:
Wash was born on a planet where the pollution was so thick, the stars were not visible. This was his main drive to become a pilot and once he was old enough, he enrolled in flight school, becoming the second best in his class. This was only because his classmate, the late Mr. Universe, had rigged the computer systems to get the easiest flight simulations, and had hacked into the grading computers to give himself the highest grades. Wash threatened to do him bodily harm but Mr. Universe offered to help Wash out whenever he needed him in the future, something Wash took full advantage of.
After he graduated, he became a pilot in the Unification War, mostly as a freelancer. He had a promising start ahead of him but was shot down after one mission, spending the rest of the War in a POW camp.
Once the War ended, in 2512, Wash did lots of freelance work and built up quite a reputation, one so good that by the time he met Malcolm Reynolds, he had a lot of other captains begging him to be their pilot. He accepted Mal's offer, despite the fact that Captain Reynolds' first mate, Zoe Allenye distrusted him.
That didn't last long as soon a relationship developed between Wash and Zoe, eventually leading to them getting married. Wash is concerned that while Zoe does love her husband, she respects and trusts their captain more. This has been the basis of a lot of fights between them, but Wash is trying to not let it get to him as much as it used to.
Wash has proven himself to be an excellent pilot for all of the jobs Mal has secured for the crew, getting the crew out of danger more than once. The most recent notch to add to his expertise was when the crew had to get to Mr. Universe's skyplex through an army of Reavers and the Alliance. When an EMP was fired, the ship lost all but 20% of its power, forcing Wash to perform evasive, rocky action like nothing he had done before. He got the ship landed, but not without severe damage. For all that, he was almost killed when a Reaver harpoon came through the windscreen of the ship, embedding itself in his seat an inch away from his body.
Wash likes playing with his toy dinosaurs when there are lulls in the action, leaving them on the dashboard of the bridge when not in use.
