River was sitting on the steps that led down into the cargo bay, her legs spread lightly apart and boots resting on the step just below. Her hands moved out, brushing out a few of the wrinkles in her deep brown dress.
She had been avoiding nearly everyone for the past week. Espicially him. She was good at avoiding him. She'd hear him coming and if she knew he was searching for her, she'd duck straight into an air vent. They only really ever saw her present at meals, where she'd pick up her plate and leave the mess hall, something that neither Mal nor Simon seemed to like.
She was specifically avoiding the children though. The voices in their heads made hers want to crack open, just so they'd seep out of her own mind, and she'd never be able to hear them again. They were such painful thoughts and they were affecting her.

Jayne came out of his bunk, rubbing his eyes. He'd been cleaning his guns and had fallen asleep. He had just now woken up, with a crick in his neck, feeling very disoriented.
He was making his way into the cargo bay to lift some weights when he saw River sitting by herself on the cargo bay steps, looking a bit sad. He'd barely been able to see her the last week, aside from her fleeing from the dining room or the hallways whenever she saw him. Something that was starting to bother him.
He made his way over to her slowly, stopping a few feet away from her, leaning against the railing. "Hey," he said, looking at her.

She was in her own world, thinking to herself about the girl. His daughter, the one who so often she could hear the whispers of, as if they were being yelled at the top of ones lungs. She saw every little thought and it made her almost sick to her stomach, when she compared them back to the thoughts of Jayne. The thoughts that she had been able to cloud herself from, when need be. She felt sorrow for the girl, of course she did. But she also felt rage, jealousy and something very close to bitterness.
She had been so caught up in her world she did not notice the footsteps, nor the thoughts. She snapped up, jumping to her feet, with an expression of clear alarm on her face. Her eyes darted around the room, as if she was looking for someone else, or possibly even a way to escape the situation.
"'Ello."

He frowned a bit when he saw her reaction. "Why you been avoidin' me, River?" he asked, cutting right to the point. "An' don' even say you ain't been, 'cause I've barely seen ya fer more than two minutes this whole week."
"I thought....I mean, we just got things out in the open, an' now...we avoid each other? Di'n' know people did that with those they liked."

"No." Her hands flew up immediately as she shook her head. "No. We're not having this conversation." She turned from him, moving down the steps two at a time.
She stopped at the bottom of the stairs, before whipping around to look at him. "Whispers! They have grown and I can't shut them out of my head. I try, River does try. Not working." She hissed, looking at him.
"Do you know what I see when I look at her?" She had been trying to accep it and she thought she was close. But images were haunting her, making her want to hide and ignore them.

He growled a bit and came closer to her. "I say we are, 'cause this is gettin' ridiculous."
He came down two more steps, now about three feet from her. "What do ya see when ya look at her?" he asked, exhaling hard.

"Oh? Ridiculous? Don't see anything sayin' I have to report to you." She narrowed her eyes at him for a moment, before shaking her head.
"Damaged little orphan." She didn't care if her words were just short of cruel.

"Never said that. Just think we should talk is all. I mean, we kissed, an' yer brother keeps lookin' at me like he wants t'kill me..." He sighed and took in a breath before continuing. "I'm just wonderin' where I stand with you now is all."
He clenched his fist a bit but said, "S'pose she is. Figure any if not all of that damage is 'cause of me and all the go se I gotta deal wit' 'fore I cin even begin t'feel right 'bout things."

"I don't know where we stand." She shook her head. "Kissed, yes. Desire more. Won't have till...damn daughter is out of my head."
She looked at him, with confusion in her eyes. "Make her go away." She slipped her hands into her hair, shutting her eyes.
She thought for a moment, wondering if she was locked onto Mikey because of the emotional connection. It was possible. But then she had an idea, a wonderful idea.
In a matter of seconds she bridged the gap between them, her arms slipping around his neck. "Make her go away." She repeated, in a much lower tone of voice, her eyes locking onto Jayne's. She wanted to focus on anything but her.
And with that in mind, she could think of only one person she wanted to focus on completely.

He listened to what she was saying, beginning to get a bit more angry. That was, until she closed the gap between them, and put her arms around his neck and locked eyes with him. Any angry thoughts Jayne might have had seemed to fall away as he looked into her eyes, feeling heat come into his face.
He put his hands on her hips, pulling her closer to him. "Well, uh, you got any...suggestions as t'how I should do that?" he asked, leaning forward just enough so that his lips were almost touching hers, but not quite.
