*River shifted, her face almost buried in her brother's arm. She was trying to pretend that she was fine, that she was ok with what was going on around her. But she couldn't help get this feeling in the bottom of her stomach everytime she looked at Mikey. Which made her feel bad, because the girl seemed to be nice.
Some of her hair was hanging in front of her face, like it always did when she was trying to hide from the present. She shifted again, sitting up, her hand moving to rub her arm. She gave a small smile when one of them made a joke, to be polite*

Jayne entered the dining hall again, rubbing the back of his neck while he walked. He stopped at the table and stood there, until Mikey turned and looked at him, a question in her eyes.
He cleared his throat before beginning. "Well, I was gonna ask you this later on, but, I suppose now's a good a time as any. Would you three like t'come with us when we leave Persephone? Captain's fine with it as long as you don't mind doin' work for yer passage. He says he won't take coin from you, so any you have is really yours t' keep."

Mikey looked up when her father came back into the room, wondering how the conversation went between him and the captain.
She didn't say anything for a moment. She was actually quite surprised by what he was offering. "Are you serious?"

"Sure am, darlin'," he said, grinning at her. "You don' have t' make up yer mind right away, we're not leavin' for two days, but it's somethin' t'think about, you know?"
He glanced at the other two. "What 'bout you two? What's yer take on all this?"

The drink Lex had been drinking sat poised to his mouth, his eyes wide with astonishment. He was a mix of emotions at this moment. Distrust, suspicion, fear, hope.
Hope was the main big one, the one that kept riding over all the others. This was something that probably would not come along again for them and while Lex still didn't fully trust Mikey's father's motives, he couldn't deny that this was something generous beyond words.
He stole a glance at Kaylee. 'Would give me some time with that fox, though, and that is nothing to sneeze at.' Though it was obvious she was with the doctor, Lex was pretty sure he could fix it so they could have some quality time together.
"I think it's definitely something to think about," he finally said, looking at Murray and Mikey.

*Murray's face was a mix of emotion. The most obvious one was fear. Though the idea of traveling, having a meal every night, and a roof over her head was temptingm she knew she couldn't complain about where they traveled. She wouldn't be able to beg for them to stay away from Londinium or core planets, where she feared she was still being searched for.
She took in a breath, giving the man a smile, not sure really what to say* Thank you...

Mal really said that? *She exclaimed, looking at Jayne* Shiny! *She perked up, smiling over to Mikey* You'll love it on 'Renity. Best ship in the 'verse, she is. *She grinned a little* And cap'n is a big ol' softy...you'll love it here...
*She paused for a moment* That is...if you decide to come

*River's eyes shifted to Jayne, her voice getting caught in her throat. She couldn't believe this. It was too much...too much information. Her brain felt small, like it had shrunk and couldn't hold any more. Her hands moved up into her hair, her eyes shutting, a small whimper escaping from her.
No, no, no. She could accept that he had a daughter...he was nearly twice her age and he had a life. She could accept that. But a reminder every day, shoved in her face...
...she stood up, hands still in her hair. She shook her head, heading immediatly for the door. She needed air and she felt like she couldn't breathe...couldn't breathe in that small room*

Through all this, Simon had just sat in his chair, holding River. He was amazed at how fast all this was going. Especially since everyone had just found out about Jayne's daughter today.
'I'm surprised Mal would actually aquiesce to this,' he thought, almost not noticing that River had moved out of his arms and ran out of the room.
"River?" he called to her, unsure what had happened. He looked at everyone and said, "I'm not sure what's wrong. I have to go." With that, he squeezed Kaylee's shoulder and went after River, hoping their conversation didn't go like the last one.

Jayne watched as River ran from the room, the distress on her face obvious, even to him.
'Gorramit,' he thought, lowering his head a bit. 'Should've waited before asking.' But what could he have done? Waited until they were just about to pull away from Persephone before he made up his mind?

Suddenly, River was pulled into the ventilation ducts. Well, actually, she climbed up herself but it was better for her mind to believe it the other way around. Therein was Napier, in such a position that no man short of a contortionist ought to be in. He covered his lips and waited for dear brother to pass them in his sweep for his sister.
"There are now two we must rid ourselves of to achieve happiness, love. Your brother and the daughter of that boy you rather fancy. Think about it, dear. Your brother tries to turn you off, tries to make you nothing more than a machine under his control. To go ballistic when it serves him and, to be what is that girl says, "Shiny"?, when it serves him. As for Jayne's offspring, well, when she's gone either through strangelation or something sharp through her chest, then he'll pay attention to you again, won't he?"

*She squeaked as she was yanked into the air ducks, immediatly ready to kick who had ever grabbed hold of her right in the face. She was near it until she saw Napier's face, and she stopped herself, glaring at him slightly. She shifted, leaning agaisnt the panel, pushing her hair from her eyes. Then she glanced out through the ventilation, watching Simon as he ran past, a slight ping of annoyance filling her, before she turned to look at him, a questioning look upon her face. As she listened, she shook her head as he talked. No...no. She didn't agree*
'Tention don't won't. 'Tention with vera to mah' head *She shook her head, couldn't believe she was hearing such things from Napier. She wouldn't...couldn't kill or hurt the girl. The girl was nearly equal to River, they shared things. Just got them in different ways.*
Simon 'es bein' Simon. He won't find us up here. He wouldn't think to look. He rarely thinks anymore

"No, mei mei. He thinks, just not of you. His mind is always on having sex with that mechanic. That is all he thinks of."
"As for Jayne's daughter, well, tell me, could he ever love you with her around? or would she always be in his head? Answer that honestly girl and you will see why you must rid yourself of your little friend."
Simon was still calling for her in the distance. "You ought to stay up here for a good while, girl. When he finds you, oh, he will be so mad at you for leaving him. Not that he's worried about you, no, nah mei guan-shee, he's worried about himself. Suspose the Reavers come? Who will be there to kill them for his sake? Who? Who? Who? Noone. That is why he searches for you. You are his gun, his sword, his tool. You are not his sister anymore. Not since the darkness. Yes, I think you should stay up here River, for if he sees you now, it's 'sleep words' for who knows how long."
"And what of the daughter? To her love, you are nothing but an other. A different one. You don't have the blood connection to Jayne that she does and so, you're just some girl, some stupid girl who loves him. Of course, Jayne probably doesn't love you. Not in the way he ought to anyway. He might love you physcially, want to you be in the family way with him, but, beyond that? Will he really want to be holding your hand, sitting together in rocking chairs when you're old and gray? No. He can't have babies with an old and gray."
All this darkness fit with Napier perfectly. If she were to give in and wipe out the entire crew, there would be noone, not even her accursed brother, to save her from his influence, to save her when he eventually takes control.

He'll be old and gray before I am. *She curled away from him, glaring at him* And what do you care, Napier? What's it matter to you? Whether or not Jayne stays with me has nothing to do with her. It's not likely she was born today...he's always known. And he hasn't shyed away yet. *She hadn't really gotten bitter with him before, but then again, he was hitting a nerve.
She said nothing of Simon because the mroe she heard it, the harder it was to argue*

Simon was still looking for River, trying to think of all the places she might have run to. He went to the bridge immediately, but didn't see her there. She wasn't in the passeger dorms and he doubted she had gone to the infirmary or back to the dining hall.
He was walking back the way he came, trying to retrace his steps, when he heard a voice above him and to his left. He looked and saw the ventilation duct. The grate on it was still there, but it looked like there was a bit of space between it and the wall.
'Why would she be in the ventilation ducts?' he asked himself, remembering a few months ago when she had done that very thing to chart a course for them to Miranda. Nonetheless, he walked over to it and lifted the grate off of the wall, coming face to face with his sister.
"River?" he asked. "What are you doing in here?"
